OTHER AVAILABLE TESTS FOR THIS DEVICE

The Oppo A94 5G is the Chinese manufacturer’s latest offering in its more affordable A-series range of smartphones. Basic device specs include a 6.43-inch, FHD+ AMOLED display with a 60 Hz refresh rate and a hole-punch selfie camera. Running the latest Android 11 OS, the A94 5G is powered by the mid-range MediaTek Dimensity 800U 5G  processor with 8 GB RAM and 128 GB storage, and there’s a 4310 mAh battery with fast 30 W charging.

Impressively at this price point, the Oppo A94 5G also features a quad camera on the rear. The main 48 MP camera utilizes a 25 mm-equivalent, f/1.7-aperture lens with a 79° field of view, and an open-loop focus motor for autofocus. The ultra-wide is equipped with a 16 mm-equivalent, f/2.2-aperture lens, and the macro and monochrome modules both use a f/2.4-aperture optic with a 89° field of view.

For video, the A94 5G will shoot high-resolution 4K 2160p/30 fps footage, as well as slow-motion footage at 1080p/120 fps and 720p/240 fps. Electronic video stabilization (EIS) is available only at 1080p/30 fps, though.

Let’s see how the Oppo A94 5G gets on in our challenging series of image quality tests.

Key camera specifications:

  • Primary: 25 mm-equivalent, 79° FOV, 6P, f/1.75-aperture lens with open-loop focus motor, auto focus
  • Ultra-wide: 16 mm-equivalent, 119° FOV, 5P, f/2.2-aperture, fixed-focus lens
  • Macro: 89° FOV, 3P, f/2.4-aperture, fixed-focus lens
  • Monochrome: 89° FOV, 3P, f/2.4-aperture, fixed-focus lens
  • 2160p/30 fps, 1080p/120 fps, 720p/240 fps video (1080p/30 fps tested)
  • EIS video stabilization at 1080p/30 fps

Pros

  • Accurate target exposure in most photos and videos
  • Generally well-controlled noise in photos
  • Stable and accurate autofocus for photos and videos
  • Pleasant bokeh photos
  • Reliable preview image
  • Pleasant video color with neutral white balance
  • Low noise in outdoor videos

Cons

  • Washed out color in photos
  • Hue shift artifacts in photos
  • HDR activation errors
  • Low detail and unnatural rendering in ultra-wide photos
  • Low detail in medium- and long-range tele shots
  • Underexposed night photos
  • Very low detail in all videos
  • Ineffective video stabilization

With a score of 108, the Oppo A94 5G ranks in the bottom half of our database overall, but is in joint second place in our Advanced segment alongside the $399 OnePlus Nord, with both just a few points behind our leading Advanced device, the Google Pixel 4a at 111; and while Google’s device shows some nice strengths for still photos, the Oppo has the advantage of an ultra-wide.

The Oppo A94 5G is capable of nicely exposed images with good color saturation in favorable outdoor conditions. Here the  white balance is slightly pinkish, but the device has captured a pleasant landscape shot overall.

The Oppo A94 5G delivers very acceptable image quality for its price segment and has similar or better photo performance compared to such competitors as the Samsung Galaxy A52 5G and the Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 Pro. Achieving a Photo score of 116, the A94 5G boasts reliable autofocus (from the main camera), generally accurate target exposures, and lower levels of noise compared to similarly priced models. Notable weaknesses to look out for are slightly washed out color and HDR activation errors that result in heavily clipped highlights.

The Oppo A94 5G achieves a Zoom score of 51, thanks in large part to an acceptable performance for tele shots. Lacking a dedicated tele-lens, detail is low in medium- and long-range zoom shots in particular, but results are better at close range, and the A94 5G puts in a stronger showing for tele shots overall compared to its Samsung and Xiaomi competitors. Ultra-wide shots aren’t very impressive, however, with low overall detail and unnatural-looking texture rendering the main reasons for its low score in this category.

With a Video score of 94, the device doesn’t fare quite as well for moving image quality and ranks 5th in our Advanced category. Video strengths include reliable autofocus, accurate target exposure, and pleasant color when shooting in good to fair lighting, as well as well-controlled noise in outdoor videos. Low detail and contrast make movies a little underwhelming generally, however, and users would do well to avoid low light, as the A94 5G noticeably underexposes videos and strong spatial noise becomes problematic. Overall, the A94 5G nicely handles video artifacts, aside from some slight color quantization here and there, but stabilization could be improved, with residual motion and a difference in sharpness between frames often visible.

Below you can find detailed analyses and image samples for all Photo, Zoom, and Video sub-attributes, as well as comparisons with competitive devices such as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy A52 5G.
